   Workshop - 2008

Two  workshops on "Selection of sites for sinking of Wells" were organised at Yavatmal and Akola, covering Farmers' distress districts in the Vidarbha Region (Yavatmal, Wardha, Amravati, Akola, Buldhana and Washim districts). The workshops were organised along with GSDA, Govt. of Maharashtra. The objective was to make the District and Taluka level functionaries, Agricultural community, NGOs, etc. understand and aware about the precautions to be taken while venturing into digging / sinking of wells to exploit ground water for irrigation purpose. The district and taluka level functionaries will in turn interact directly with the farmer community and guide them in sinking wells at the sites which are scientifically proved to be worthy for ground water development. Farmers will also be cautioned about the sites which are not feasible for ground water development.

Literature on the ground water conditions of the districts were distributed in the Workshops. Scientists of CGWB and GSDA have explained the need for selecting sites for sinking of wells on scientific basis. They have elaborated the hydrogeological conditions that are existing in these six districts and also the favourable hydrogeological conditions that are suitable for sinking of wells. Guidlines were also distributed including the DOs and DON'Ts for the selection of sites.

The District Collectors and the CEOs of Zilla Parishad have given full support in conducting the workshops and participated in the programmes to inspire the officials in order to help the farmer community to come over the problems related to ground water exploitation.
