The
Central
Ground Water Board
has been constituted as the Authority
in pursuance of the Hon’ble Supreme
Court’s order by the Ministry
of Environment & Forest vide Gazette
Notification No. 30 Part II, Section 3
of sub-section (ii) dated 14.1.1997.
Mandate:
Regulation and control of ground water
management and development of the country.
Objectives
:
Exercise of powers under Section 5 of
the Environment
(protection) Act,1986 for issuing
directions and taking such measures in
respect of all the matters referred to
in sub-section (2) of Section 33 of the
said Act.
To resort to the penal provisions contained
in Sections 15-21 of the said Act.
To regulate indiscriminate boring and
withdrawal of ground water in the country
and to issue necessary regulatory directions
with a view to preserve and protect the
ground water.
Under
the Regulatory Act , to notify an area
where over exploitation, pollution, salinity
hazard etc has been considered.
Jurisdiction:
The jurisdiction of the Authority shall
be the whole of India.
The Authority shall function under the
administrative control of the Govt. of
India in the Ministry of Water Resources.
The Authority has already been constituted
under the chairmanship of the Chairman,
Central
Ground Water Board
and three members from CGWB and one member
from Ministry of Environment & Forest.
