Ground Water Monitoring

Ground water levels are being measured four times a year during January, April/ May, August and November by Central Ground Water Board through a network of about 15000 observation wells located all over the country. This data is used for assessment of ground water resources and changes in the regime consequent to various development and management activities. For strengthening of ground water monitoring network and measuring capabilities, a World Bank aided Hydrology Project was sanctioned in 1997 under the Ministry of Water Resources. The project was implemented with the coordination and participation of 9 Southern States. Under the project, 2239 purpose built piezometers have been constructed to strengthen the existing ground water monitoring network.and1200 digital water level recorders have been installed at select wells to acquire high frequency water level data so as to monitor short term ground water regime changes. Ground water samples are collected through these observation wells once a year during the month of April/ May to create background information of ground water quality changes on regional scale. The State wise observation wells are given below:-

  1. The Monitoring of water level and water quality is being carried out by CGWB since 1969.

  2. Water Level measurements are regularly taken four times a year and water quality sampling is done once a year.

  3. Bulletins containing data of each measurement are issued periodically. An year book comprising all the data of water level and water quality is also issued every year.
