Ground Water Level Scenario in Kerala State

        Depth to ground water level in Kerala State as monitored from the observation stations in Kerala State is widely varying in the range of 0.20 to 20 metres below ground level (mbgl) except in isolated areas.  Water level goes up to 26 metres Kumbalam area of Kollam district, Mavinakatta area of Kasaragod district and also up to 56 metres in Pulluvila area of Thiruvananthapuram district  where thick lateritic overburden occurs.  Most parts of the State (about 75% area) which are midland areas shows depth to water level in the range of 2 to 10 metres.  In the western parts of Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Kollam districts where the coastal plains are seen, the water level is shallow and is less than 2 mbgl. In the northern parts of Kasaragod and central parts of Kannur and Kollam districts water level is comapartively deeper and is in the range of 2 – 20 mbgl.
