CGWB is the nodal agency for the hydrology project for Peninsular states
with respect to ground water component. The project seeks to improve existing hydrograph
network set ups by construction of purpose-built-observation wells (piezometers) wherever
needed and mechanization of measurement systems (Digital water level recorders) and
collection, storage and dispersal of Hydrograph data to end user namely agencies involved
in the water resources sector through improved data centers and data transmission network.

Besides monitoring water
level the project emphasizes improvement in water quality monitoring. Till the advent of
hydrology project, only the phreatic aquifer was being monitored through open wells.
however with the development of the deeper aquifers by the farmers and govt. agencies, it
became imperative to monitor the deeper aquifers also. |
Under
hydrology project 372 purpose built piezometers were constructed out of which 95 are
shallow piezometers drilled upto 35 m depth and the ramaining 277 are deep piezometers
with depth ranges between 40 to 120 m depth. The purpose built piezometers have given an
insight into the shallow as well deeper aquifer water level behavior in Madhya Pradesh.
For example, hitherto it was not know that seasonal fluctuation of ground water levels,
could be as high as 50 meters or that the water levels could go as deep as 100 meters
which were about 15 meters during the post monsoon period. The drilling of piezometers
also helped in gathering the subsurface lithological information of the area. Water
sampling through these piezometers helps in collection of true representative samples from
shallow/deep aquifers by the portable pumps provided under hydrology project.
Under hydrology project
114 digital water level recorded (DWLR) have been installed to monitor the water levels of
piezometers as per the desired frequency. These DWLRS help in avoiding manual errors in
monitoring data can retrieved at 6 hours interval thereby the effect of recharge,
earthquake etc. can also be recorded record of temperature is also maintained.
Under hydrology project
regional office data centre (RODC) has also been setup. The computerization of the water
level and quality data has helped immensely in generating outputs as required for
scientific planning at a very short notice. The up gradation of regional chemical
laboratory done under hydrology project has provided the base for analyzing 40 radicals
apart from organic and bacteriological analysis. |
