STATUS OF GROUND WATER REGIME IN TAMIL NADU & U.T. OF PONDICHERRY

(NOVEMBER 2006)

 Monitoring of ground water levels was carried out at 875 ground water monitoring wells in the State of Tamil Nadu and U.T. of Pondicherry. Among the wells monitored, 527 are dug wells and 348 are piezometers/tube wells.

Plate-I depicts the groundwater scenario during November 2006. Fluctuations of water level between November 2005 & November 2006 and between mean water level for November (1996-2005) and November 2006 have been analysed

The normal seasonal rainfall varies from 146.3 mm (Tirunelveli district) to 295.1 mm (Pondicherry) whereas the actual rainfall for this period ranged from 125.1 mm in Krishnagiri district to 648.8 mm over Chennai district.

52 percentage of wells have recorded rise in water levels during November 2006 and 48 percentage of wells recorded fall in water level in comparison to November 2005 water levels. The fall in water level is noted in the eastern and western part of the State.

73 percentage of wells have recorded rise in water levels during November 2006 with respect to respective decadal means when compared to decadal fluctuations with November 2005 (71%).

27 percentage of wells have recorded fall in water levels during November 2006 with respect to respective decadal means when compared to decadal fluctuations with November 2005 have shown that 29 percentage of wells have recorded fall in water level.

Rise in piezometric surface has been noticed in 51 % of wells analysed when compared to that of previous year.
