The study area comprises of 7 blocks of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal. The total geographical
area encompassed under the project is 3374.46 sq. km. It is bounded by the north latitudes of
26˚59’49.2” and 26˚15’39.6” east longitudes of 88˚23’31.2” 89˚08’2.4” in Survey of India
toposheet no. 78B/5, 78B/6, 78B/9, 78B/10, 78B/11, 78B/13, 78B/14, 78B/15, 78F/1, 78F/2. The
district with its headquarters at Jalpaiguri has 2 Sub-Divisions (Jalpaiguri Sadar and Mal) and 3
Municipal Towns (Jalpaiguri, Dhupguri and Mal). The total population of the study area is
1920545 as per 2011 Census with rural population accounting for almost 87% and the rest 13%
as urban population.
