The study area ( Plate 1) comprising 14 blocks is located in the eastern bank of Bhagirathi river,
a tributary of river Ganga and flanked by the river Ganga/ Padma in the north-east, by the river
Jalangi in the south-east and the district boundary of Nadia in the south. The area extends
between North latitudes 23° 45' 15” and 24° 32' 05” and East longitudes 88° 02' 27” and 88° 45'
03”. The study area partly falls in the Survey of India Degree sheet no. 78D, 79A and 72P. The
study area forms part of Lower Ganga Alluvial Plains in the inter-fluvial belt of Ganga basin.
The study area is well connected by road with NH-34 and by rail partly with Sealdah - Lalgola
Section and partly with Howrah - Malda Section.
