The study area comprises 11 blocks of Howrah district in West Bengal. The present study area
covers a total of 1137 sq. km. geographical area. It is bounded by the north latitudes 22˚48’ and
22˚12’ east longitudes of 87˚50’ 88˚23’ in Survey of India Toposheet numbers 73N/14, 73N/15,
79B/02, 79B/03, 79B/04, 79B/06.
It is bounded on the western and southern side by Purba Medinipur district, on the north by Hugli
district and on the east by the Kolkata metropolitan area, and north and south 24parganas districts.
Howrah district is one of the highly urbanized area of West Bengal. Howrah is the second smallest
district after Kolkata. The district is bounded by the Hooghly River and the North 24
Parganas and South 24 Parganas districts on the east, on the north by the Hooghly district , and on
the south by Purba Midnapore East district. On the west Howrah district is bordered by the Ghatal

sub-division of Purba Midnapore West district, and partly by the Arambagh sub-division of Hooghly
district to the north-west, and the Tamluk sub-division of Midnapore East district to the south-west.
Boundaries of the district are naturally demarcated by Rupnarayan River on west and south-west,
and by Bhagirathi-Hooghly river on east and south-east side.
