Online Application for Stable Isotope Studies-Groundwater

Isotopes are atoms of an element with the same atomic number but different atomic masses. Water from different sources and places can be characterized by their isotopic signatures or unique ‘fingerprints’ which are used as tracers in groundwater studies.

Potential applications of stable isotopic studies in groundwater include understanding aquifer recharge sources and dynamics, surface water-groundwater interactions, inter-aquifer interactions, salinity issues, groundwater flow paths and contamination transport, aquifer renewability, submarine groundwater discharge, spring characterization etc.

About the application

This online system provides tools to search and access stable isotope data. It also has tools for map based browsing and plotting of parameters related to stable isotope studies. Data from Global Network of Isotopes in Precipitation (GNIP) pertaining to India are mapped to this system. Users can also upload, visualize, and analyze their own datasets.
